Is there a setting in Management Studio to NOT display "NULL" in the
Results tab for either Grid or Text view? I didn't see anything under
Options. I'm currently having to do search and replace to remove it
before passing on to users or using for imports to other apps. Third
party import programs typically treat this as text.
MarkChange the query to say COALESCE(stringValue, '')

Management Studio, you have to take one step back. So now if I have
100 varchar columns, I'll have to create 100 alias columns
(ISNULL(ColName, '') AS ColName). I just don't understand why MS can't
carry over features in previous versions to the next. It seems they
could have added an option to "Query Results" to display NULL or blank
for the output. This wasn't a problem in QA.

It's quite possible that they got a lot of complaints about that
"feature"... to me, at least, there is a big difference between NULL and
blank. If I can't visibly tell the difference, I'm going to have to change
something.
It's kind of like a car manufacturer choosing to put the cup holder on the
dash or in the center console. No matter which option they choose, they're
going to piss someone off.

division in a view
In trying to simplify an overly complex query [at one time, 1000+ views and
14 queries run in query analyzer!], I am trying to incorporate many of the
different views/queries together but am having troubles with one thing;
trying to divide one of the columns in a view.
SELECT FIPS, [MTG TYPE], COUNT(RCVD_1ST) AS RCD1ST,
COUNT(MAILED_1ST) AS MLD1ST, AVG(DATEDIFF(day, MAILED_1ST,
RCVD_1ST)) AS mldgap, AVG(DATEDIFF(day, CLOSING, MAILED_1ST))
AS closegap, 100 * (RCD1ST / MLD1ST) AS POR
Doesn't workPerhaps you can incorporate a CASE statement
select
case MLD1ST when 0 then 0
else
100 * (RCD1ST / MLD1ST)
end
from <your table>

T-SQL in such a way as to not have any problems with a divide by zero error:
create table #foo (RCD1ST int, MLD1ST decimal(5,2))
insert into #foo values (5, 2)
insert into #foo values (10, 2)
insert into #foo values (15, 0)
insert into #foo values (20, null)
PRINT ''

SELECT *, 100 * (RCD1ST / MLD1ST) AS POR FROM #foo
go

Division Calc in Column Returns 0's or 1's
I am dividing 2 numbers in a view (View2). The 2 numbers we sums of number
calculated in a previous grouped view (View1). The column in View2 that
devieds 1 of the numbers by the other, returns either a 0 or a 1 for each
record... but they should be actual numbers instead.
The divide column in View2 looks like this: Number2 / Number 1
The SQL statement looks like this:
SELECT Number1, Number2, Number2 / Number1 AS Expr1
FROM dbo.View1
What do you think is going on? Is SQL Server getting the DataTypes mixed
up?
Thank You!!

1 GB/Day for only $8.95If your numbers are INTs then you're getting integer divisions. For
example:
SELECT 1/2
returns 0.
Try casting one of them to NUMERIC:
SELECT Number1, Number2, CAST(Number2 AS NUMERIC(10, 5)) / Number1 AS
Expr1
FROM dbo.View1

is that Number1 and Number 2 are bot integer types (int or smallint, etc).
Then SQL does an integer divide and always returns an integer result.
Change one of them to a type which can have a decimal part (float, or
decimal, etc) before doing the divide, something like
SELECT Number1, Number2, (Cast Number2 As Float) / Number1 As Expr1

Dividing in a view: 1 or 0
Hello,
I am having, what seems to me as the oddest problem in SQL.
I have created a view based on two tables, the two key columns in these
tables are integers (quantity) what I am trying to do in this table is divide
one by the other to get the weight which I want as a decimal however SQL
Server is giving me a 1 or a 0 which I dont want!
Any ideas?!
Take a look at this
declare @.i1 int, @.i2 int
select @.i1 =10,@.i2 =3
select @.i1/@.i2,@.i1/(@.i2*1.0),1.0*@.i1/@.i2
http://sqlservercode.blogspot.com/
|||Thanks for your response however perhaps I wasnt clear,
The weight value will always be between 1 and 0 in the same way as a
percentage is between 1 and 0!
My problem is that when I have 34 / 823 I get 0 instead of 0.041312272
Thanks in Advance

Distributing SQL2000 Database
Is it possible to encrypt a database so that clients may
not view the table structure, relationships, triggers,
functions, etc.? Objective is to protect the back-end
design from being exposed. You can encrypt sps, udf and triggers, but I don't think you can select
without seeing the structure

Distributed transaction aborted by MSDTC
hi,
i'm implementing a distributed database(partitioned view) system using 3
linked MSSQL 2000 server(SP3),
when I try update the distributed table within a BEGIN TRAN & COMMIT TRAN, I
get the error "Distributed transaction aborted by MSDTC", or sometime
"Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new
transaction or the NULL transaction."
the http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=834849 says this only happened if one
of the linked server is MSSQL Server 7.0, but all my servers are 2000 Server
with SP3, so can somebody help to resolve this?
If you are running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 you can use DTC tracing
to find out why the transaction aborts, otherwise you can use SQL Profiler
and include the DTC transaction event class.
Do you have a trigger on one of the tables that is involved in the
transaction?
