Do I need to set a Drillthrough action to have Reporting Services perform a drillthrough?

Hi,

Do I need to set a Drillthrough action to have Reporting Services perform a drillthrough? Or are they two separate things?

To be clearer, is the point of the Drillthrough action (or any of the actions) only for the Cube Browser is AS2005 or are they used elsewhere, i.e. Reporting Services?

Thank you.

Gumbatman

I was also curius on whether reporting services support drillthrough or not, and found the following link. I guess, they don't.

http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=126175

P.S. You don't mandatory need to have an DT action to use a Drillthrough statement.

|||

Irinia,

Thank you for the information. It is a great help. I was pulling my hair out trying to find an answer.

A few clarifications:

- Drillthrough and other actions are often used in applications beyond just the AS 2005 cube browser.

- This MSDN paper describes the configuration of a drillthrough action:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345125.aspx

>>

Enabling Drillthrough in Analysis Services 2005

...

Analysis Services 2005 introduces a new action type called Drillthrough. The target of a drillthrough action can only be cells in the cube. The MDSCHEMA_ACTIONS schema rowset exposes these as rowset actions. The action expression is a DRILLTHROUGH statement that can be executed by the client application and the resulting rowset displayed to the user.

Clearly drillthrough fits in very cleanly into the actions framework. But the real advantage of drillthrough actions is that it provides the cube designer with the ability to pre-define the return columns of the DRILLTHROUGH statement (Figure 2). This is analogous to the Analysis Services 2000 experience where the database administrator specifies the tables and columns in the Drillthrough Options dialog in Analysis Manager.

...

>>

- Reporting Services has its own concept of "drillthrough" within a report (see paper excerpt below), so I assume that you're only referring to reporting the results of an Analysis Services drillthrough query.

- Though the Analysis Services Provider doesn't support AS drillthrough queries, the older OLE DB Provider still does, as mentioned in this OLAP newsgroup thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.sqlserver.olap/msg/4870097ed8fcffda

>>

Message from discussion Linked Server to Analysis Services 2005 gets Access denied.

How about trying the OLE DB option? I couldn't get the following AW
Drillthrough query to work with the RS 2005 Analysis Services Provider;
but it returned 8 records when I used OLE DB for OLAP 9.0 instead:

Drillthrough
Select [Ship Date].[Calendar].[Calendar Year].&[2001] on columns,
[Customer].[Customer Geography].[State-Province].&[TAS]&Automobile on rows
from [Adventure Works]
where [Measures].[Internet Order Quantity]
>>

- For guidance on setting up AS drillthrough in Reporting Services using OLE DB, you can refer to this MSDN paper (even though it was written for SQL Server 2000):

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa902647(SQL.80).aspx

>>

Integrating Analysis Services with Reporting Services

...

Adding "Drill-through" Capability to a Report

The concept of "drill-through" can mean different things depending on the technology being used. For those familiar with Analysis Services, drill-through represents the ability to return the detail records that contribute to the value of a cell. For Reporting Services, "drill-through" is the capability to jump from one report to another report when the user selects an action-enabled object on the report. It's quite possible to develop a report that uses the drill-through action type for Reporting Services to issue an Analysis Services DRILLTHROUGH MDX query, and it's also possible to use the drill-through action type of Reporting Services to return a report that returns data from Analysis Services without using the DRILLTHROUGH MDX statement. Sound confusing? Hopefully a couple of examples can help us understand the difference between the two, and how the two concepts can also be used together.

Deepak,

Thank you so much for the information. It has clarified a bunch of things that I was having trouble getting my head around. There just didn't seem to be enough information about this. Plus, with Report Builder, it seems to do an "auto" drillthrough but I can't figure out how to control which fields are returned.

I am going to read all the information you sent.

Thanks again.

Do I need to reinstall analysis services after we upgraded sqlserv

Do I need to reinstall/upgrade analysis services after we upgraded sqlserver
from stanadard edition to enterprise edition? The developer tried to use
partition on analysis service and message from analysis manager showed that
it is not aware that our sqlserver has been upgraded to enterprise edition
already. "user-defined partitions are available only if you installed

May be the problem is caused by the meta data repository? If we migrate the

Do I need to learn report services if I already knew Crystal report?

Do I need to learn report services if I already knew Crystal report?

What features of Reporting services are not in Crystal report?

Hi

Well when i first started building reports online i started with CR but when the big bang of SSRS came in i decided had to learn it but i felt really bad to start learning all from scratch... long story short the answer is yes!! you do have to learn it... it aint much though its quite simple i suggest u seek out in the web for some tutorials... theres a few good ones out there that saved my live!!

and about the features available that are not in CR's.. well it all depends on wich version ur working on... but the good thing about it is that the reports are centralized in a reportserver...

hope this motivates you (know how u feel being a CR ex user...)

Later aspfun...Yes

|||

Thank you.

I used CR in net for a few year but I still do not like CR. The only thing I like CR is you can select dataset as data source.

But, SSRS did not have this option.

|||

here is 3 videos that could give you a deeper idea about srss features and what you can and cannot do with it ...http://www.ssw.com.au/ssw/Standards/Rules/RulesToBetterSQLReportingServices.aspx#use

Do I need SSIS to process cube?

There is a function called "proactive caching" in Analysis services. It can:
-Automatic synchronization with the relational database
-No more explicit "cube processing

But I cannot have the latest data in the cube even I set the proactive mode as "real time"

Do I need SSIS to process cube in this case?

Following is the procedures I have done:
1. test the data
1.1 use the bi dev studio to browser the cube, ensure no new data are there
1.2 process the the cube and browser the data, ensure new data are there
1.3 delete new data from source database and reprocess the cube, ensure no new data are there
1.4 add new data again

2. configure the proactive setting of cube
2.1 use sql server management studio to open the cube and open the properties window
2.2 in the option of "proactive caching" select "low-latency MOLAP" (even real-time ROLAP later), then click ok

3. configure the proactive setting of cube
3.1 open the patitions view properties window

3.2 in the option of "proactive caching" select "low-latency MOLAP" (even real-time ROLAP later), then click ok

3.3 in the notification tab, select "sql server " and specifiy tracking tables to the "fact table", which is a view to get data from real fact table.

4. wait a period of time...

5. test the data again
5.1 use the bi dev studio to browser the cube, but no new data are there (even I selected real-time ROLAP later). I even tried the reconnect and refresh options in the tool bar

So my questions are :
1. Did I do the right thing to achieve the target "Automatic synchronization with the relational database "

2. Can I monitor the procedure of synchronization, such as monitoring the log of processing, viewing the schedule setting and status of the process?

Thanks a lot!

You'd be better putting this on the SSAS forum.

-Jamie

|||

Sorry to post to the wrong place. But I did post it to the SSAS yesterday but nobody answered. Since it is urgent for me to solve the problem, I tried to post here.

I just wanted to know whether I should use "proactive caching" or use SSIS to solve the problem. Even a simple answer yes or no will be mostly appreciated.

Thanks!

|||

Well it depends on your requirements.

Using ProActive caching means there is an unknown latency between putting data into the warehouse and it appearing in the cube. But the good thing is you don't have to build extra functionality to do it.

The opposite is true of using SSIS. You process the cube when you need it to but you have to build, maintain and control that extra fucntionality.

Its your choice.

-Jamie

|||

Thanks Jamie.

That means I can use proactive caching to synchronize the data from database? Now the problem is how to make it work. At least I think I am in the right track. So I will put more time on it.

Thanks again.

Sorry, I still cannot work it out. Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance!

Do I have to install IIS 6 for reporting Services?

Right now we have IIS 5.0 installed on Windows 2000 server. Could we use
reporting services under this configuration?Yes. I used that before I upgraded to 2003 Server. You do have to install
the 1.1 framework so if you have other apps that run with 1.0 you can do
this but you will need to jump through some hoops to have your website use
both.

DNS_HOST_NOT_FOUND on localhost with Adventureworks

Hi, I just installed on XP Pro SP1 - the developer edition for SQL 2000 &
Report Services. The problem I am encountering is that I can not get any
report to render. I can publish/deploy them without error. The report
manager works fine until I click on a report.
Here's the odd part, if I use the reportserver URL such as :
http://localhost/reportserver?%2fSampleReports%2fCompany+Sales&rs:Command=Render
The report renders fine. The issue is rendering in Report Manager. Here is
the full error message:
Bad Gateway
The following error occurred:
[code=DNS_HOST_NOT_FOUND] The host name was not found during the DNS lookup.
Contact your system administrator if the problem is not found by retrying the
URL.
----
Please contact the administrator.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you.I found the problem - the config file for RSManager only had the computer
name, but not the entire DSN name.

DNS, Internet and Reporting Services

Seem to not be able to get set up right. Have split-brain dns (Server2003
with AD) natted at the firewall with 5 domains - one internal only and
dynamic; all others static for basically websites and email pointers.
Websites, email, sql, asp pages are working fine - EXCEPT REPORTING
SERVICES!!!
I have uninstalled, reinstalled, added IUSR_MachineName to users and role
assignment as browse in RS. Gave IUSR_MachineName read permissions to folder
and have the following to report:
With
<ReportServerExternalUrl>http://domainName/ReportServer</ReportServerExternalUrl> not added.
Within IIS Reports set to no anonymous and winAuthen on and ReportServer set
to no anonymous and winAuth on: Security options and reports display
appropriately. Not viewable using interal ip address. Viewable from outside
the firewall using external ip address only after login prompt.
With
<ReportServerExternalUrl>http://domainName/ReportServer</ReportServerExternalUrl> added.
Within IIS Reports set to no anonymous and winAuthen on and ReportServer set
to anonymous and winAuth on:
Using Internal IP: Login, then Folder Listing, Security options do not
display and reports give page not found. Report server - report viewable
Using ServerName: Login, Folder Listing, Security options do not display and

- report viewable.
Using domain name: Reports - page not found, ReportServer - page not found.
With
<ReportServerExternalUrl>http://domainName/ReportServer</ReportServerExternalUrl> added.
Within IIS Reports set to no anonymous and winAuthen on and ReportServer set
to anonymous and winAuth on AND virtual directories added under website AND
home.aspx added and moved to top under documents for virtual directory:
Using Internal IP: Folder Listing (no login), Security options do not

Using domain name url: Reports - 403.8; ReportServer - 403.8
Next?
JanetHello Janet,
If the Report Manager and Report Server are on the same machine then remove
the <ReportServerExternalUrl> and the <ReportServerUrl> from the <UI> node
in the config file - and replace with this:
<UI>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>/ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
</UI>

Thanks so much for replying. I made the change, but unfortunately there was
no change. When I try to use the url with the domain name instead of the ip
address or machineName, I still get the 403.8 dns error. I even tried
removing the virtual directories for reports and reports server from the
website - no change.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,

DMX Tutorials for AdventureWorks

Can anybody help me find a comprehensive tutorial on DMX executed against the AdventureWorks database on Analysis Services on SQL Server 2005?We don't have a dedicated DMX tutorial available currently but the DMX reference in Books Online as well as the Tips & Tricks section at www.sqlserverdatamining.com would be good resources to start with.

DMX from Java

My preferred programming language is Java (sorry Microsoft). I've searched for examples of running DMX queries into an Analysis Services database from Java but failed to locate any. I've seen suggestions that XMLA could be used but again, I can't locate any examples (in any language). For my current project I ran up the white flag and used C# instead but this wouldn't be an option in other cases. It would be possible to make the DMX calls from C# objects and call those from Java but that's pretty labourious to code.

Suggestions?

have you tried the XMLA Thin Client sample at http://www.sqlserverdatamining.com/DMCommunity/LiveSamples/124.aspx ?

|||I found that page but I didn't find any code sample to go with it.|||There's an old(er) code sample here http://www.sqlserverdatamining.com/DMCommunity/SQLServer2000/Links_LinkRedirector.aspx?id=96

DMQL

DMQL use for query data mining ?

how can i use it ? ( i'm using Analysis services 2000).

can you give me an example.

thanks

dll locked by VS

Hi,
I'm new to VS-Development an have to write a little assembly for Reporting
Services. Every time a change something in the assembly, I call the
following .bat-file:
copy "D:\rw\Visual Studio
2005\wbiReports\wbiReports\bin\Debug\wbiReports.dll" "C:\Programme\Microsoft
SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\"
copy "D:\rw\Visual Studio
2005\wbiReports\wbiReports\bin\Debug\wbiReports.dll" "\\wbi-lyta\C$\Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin\"
copy "D:\rw\Visual Studio
2005\wbiReports\wbiReports\bin\Debug\wbiReports.dll" "C:\Programme\Microsoft
Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\"
But the last copy fails, if there is still one VS open. I normally have 3
projects open, 2 reports and the assembly-project. Now having to close not
only every project but even close all VSs is very annoying. Am I doing
anything wrong?
Regards,
RalphI have run into the same problem. The best workaround I found is to
use NUnit to do all of my testing for the assembly. When I'm done I
install it into the appropriate directories and modify and test my
reports. This allows me to avoid the problem for the most part.

Dividing lines between questions in report

Hello
I'm using SQL Server Reporting Services 2000. I have a report with the
following details:-
Subtopic Question Answer Total %age Details %age
The query behind the report groups results on subtopic and question.
What I would like to do is put in a dividing line every time the question
changes. This will not be every line, however, since there can be up to 4
answers for each question. I am hiding duplicate questions, so the
question text only shows on the first line, although there may be 4 lines
for each question altogether.
When I try to add a separating line it adds one after every line, so for
each question there will be up to 4 lines. I only want a line to appear
when the question changes.
Can anyone help with this? It's driving me bonkers!
Many thanks
Denise CrawleyIf you include a group footer, you can create the line there.

Distruibuted Reports showing old machine name in the url.

I have a machine with Sql Server 2005 running the Reporting Services. The
server runs both the front-end and back-end.
I change the machine name after installation of Sql Server 2005 and the
Reporting Services.
I subscribed to a report, but the report is delivered to me with the old
machine name in the url.
E.g.
http://ewisql4/reportserver?%2fUNAUTHORIZED+JOB+CREATION+MONITORING%2fUNAUTHORIZED+JOB+CREATION+ORS&rs%3aParameterLanguage=en-US
But it should be:
http://ewisql3/reportserver?%2fUNAUTHORIZED+JOB+CREATION+MONITORING%2fUNAUTHORIZED+JOB+CREATION+ORS&rs%3aParameterLanguage=en-US
What can do to resolve this? Thanks in advanceHi,
Try to change the SSRS box name in the %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\ folder,
rsreportserver.config file.
Change the value of the <UrlRoot>http://ewisql4/reportserver</UrlRoot> to
<UrlRoot>http://ewisql3/reportserver</UrlRoot> or whatever the new server
name.
Restart the SSRS service, then try to render the report again.
I hope it will help for you.

Janos

Distribution without Exchange.

Is it possible to use the automatic distribution that is built into Reporting
Services 2005 if you do not have access to an Exchange server. We currently
outsource our email and would like to keep away from having to put Exchange
within our network.
Is this possible? If so, can someone point me to the proper place to begin
looking.
ThanksI could be very mistaken, but I don't SSRS requires Exchange. It only need an
SMTP Server...

You are correct. This article also eludes to it.

Distributing/importing semantic models

Hi,
i'm using SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services to create ad-hoc reports.
Using the BI Dev Studio i'm defining a DSV and adding queries to it
before refining in the semantic model. i need to be able to distribute
these to our customers, who use an SS DB with known schema.
In a simulated customer environment i've successfully imported the DSV
file (using SMSS) to RS. When i subsequently try to import the SMDL
file i get an error complaining that the DataSourceView element is
missing from the SemanticModel. Quite correct. But how do i specify
the DSV element or otherwise make the association?
It is quite acceptable to me to make a simple text edit to the SMDL
file.
TIA for any help.OK, slight correction - i haven't successfully imported the DSV.
Import appeared to succeed but there's actually no data visible for it
in SMSS.|||Since there are no replies i'm either very stupid or nobody knows. If
it's the latter then for the benefit of all here's how i did it in the
end.
DataSourceView is a valid element of the SemanticModel element. So
manually edit your SMDL file and paste the entire content of your DSV
file (which is a single DataSourceView element) just above the
SemanticModel closure tag ("</SemanticModel>").
The Management Studio will now happily import the modified SMDL file.
The customer just needs to manually change the Data Source to their own
database using Management Studio (or Report Manager).
Cheers all.

Distributing Sql Express with Advanced Services

I'm writing an application that uses Sql Express 2005 with Advanced Services (for fulltext indexing) and will be needing to deploy the database server. I just realized that the install is 230+MB. Is there a way to trim this down to just the components/features I need?

Thanks,
Eric

hi Eric,

if you need FTX service, the Advanced Services package is the minimal deployment base... way igger then the "regular" SQLExpress package...
